The Challenges of Creating a Modern Visual Identity for the Promotion of a Research Project Engaging with an Ancient Mystery: The Visual Identity of myEleusis

General

The attempt to negotiate an ancient mystery in the present, such as the Eleusinian Mysteries, and the design of an innovative research project like myEleusis, which aligns with the demands of an ever-evolving present, is no simple task. When the memory of a ritual and its material remnants have survived through time, carrying multiple symbolisms, their projection to a modern audience with a new identity requires absolute attention, thorough research, and creative design.

The issue is not only the preservation of the authenticity of the mystery itself but also its adaptation so that it remains captivating and relevant, open to experience and multiple interpretations, without being confined to the reproduction of a crystallized historical truth.

However, when these conditions are redefined, there is always the risk of misinterpretation. Historical accuracy and authenticity must be preserved to prevent the creation of a distorted or "commercialized" version of the past in the present. To avoid this, thorough research and collaboration between cultural and communication professionals are required, ensuring a multidisciplinary approach in selecting the elements to be highlighted.

The digital world now offers limitless possibilities for the dissemination of cultural heritage. Today, designers have access to cutting-edge digital tools for image processing and graphic design, advanced 3D modeling applications, and specialized software for motion graphics and animation. At the same time, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in graphic design is opening up new horizons, enabling automated, flexible, and highly efficient creative processes, while also providing professionals with more opportunities for innovative design and multidimensional creative applications.

However, in the context of highlighting archaeological themes, one of the greatest challenges is connecting each theme with today's audience. People today increasingly seek interactive, immersive, and engaging experiences that combine knowledge, entertainment, and hands-on interaction. Thus, developing a visual communication strategy that considers the interests, habits, and preferences of the audience is of vital importance. From social media to mobile applications, the cultural visual narrative must be adapted to modern platforms, encouraging interaction and engagement.

At the same time, creating a modern visual identity for an archaeological site and the mysteries associated with it requires a clear and comprehensible visual representation that resonates with a contemporary audience. For this reason, in the research project “myEleusis”, the use of colors, symbols, and designs that reflect history while also fitting into a modern design framework was a key guiding principle in shaping its logos, UX/UI Design & Web Design, graphic symbols and buttons, wayfinding signage, color palette, promotional brochures, as well as templates for social media posts and other communication channels of the project. Thus, traditional imagery and archetypal symbols were adapted and reinterpreted through a more contemporary aesthetic, ensuring that their core meaning remained intact.

Thus, with the right methodological tools, the utilization of new technologies, and a well-designed visual and communication approach, we can keep the heritage of the past alive, making it open to experience and accessible to all, while simultaneously offering a new perspective for future generations—an evolving and negotiable field. This is the challenge that we, as cultural professionals, are called to address. It is our responsibility to move beyond a one-dimensional, “fixed” historical narrative and transition into a modern and more personal storytelling approach—one that encourages the renegotiation of traditional historical discourse, always guided by scientific accuracy and the integration of accessibility and inclusivity in all its aspects.

The fact that the Eleusinian Mysteries were open to men and women, young and old, free citizens and slaves, and were so widespread in antiquity, yet today their true essence and content remain unclear, was the main challenge faced by the project's graphic design team. Specifically, the team had to develop a visual identity that would present this ancient ritual in a way that preserves its mystical nature, while at the same time making it comprehensible, open to experience, personal storytelling, and accessible to all.

The approach adopted for the visual identity of the project was based on the discovery model of content presentation, incorporating a gradual revelation of information to encourage knowledge acquisition, as well as to promote interactivity and the possibility of personal interpretation.

The above approaches and guiding principles led to the creation of a dynamic and contemporary logo, depicting the two goddesses of Eleusis, the Mother and the Daughter. The myth of the two deities is represented both iconographically and typographically, capturing the essence of the myth and the Eleusinian Mysteries.

The union of the two figures completes the cycle of nature, symbolizing blossoming and fruition, as well as the cycle of life, embodying hope for the afterlife, thus creating a truly mystical symbol. At the same time, the typography of the logo follows both an ascending and descending movement, symbolizing the journey of the Daughter between the upper and lower worlds. Additionally, the nine typographic elements, corresponding to the nine days of Demeter’s wandering, were placed at the top of the symbol to emulate the cyclical nature of life and nature itself.

The research project “myEleusis: Initiation into Eleusis of the Past through the Eyes of Today” was co-financed by Greece and the European Union and implemented by the Ephorate of Antiquities of West Attica, the Athena Research Center, MENTOR, and CITE (Communication & Information Technologies Experts).
