Echoes: Reconstructing the life of traditional settlements through interactive experiences and 3d sound

Research Projects

The main objective of the research project “ECHOES: Reconstructing the life of traditional settlements through interactive experiences and 3d sound” is the design and development of digital tools and methodology for the creation and presentation of interactive content for the visitors of cultural sites, especially traditional settlements, by employing the innovative approach of experience reconstruction and cutting-edge technologies, with special focus on 3d sound.

Experience reconstruction is based on historical sources that describe the life and major events in the traditional settlement in the past and leverages them to develop a story world, with characters, plot, and events, which, by being realistic and realistically staged on the actual space, becomes a way to reconstruct the past life of the settlement.

The visitor experiences this story world via a digital mobile app, the content of which goes beyond simple multimedia and encompasses a set of cutting-edge technologies, such as 3d sound and panoramic drawings, which create the feeling that the story world really springs from the space surrounding the visitor and not from her mobile phone.

ECHOES will develop two pilot experiences, in Xanthi’s Old Town and in the Historical Center of Athens. Their development will act as a guide for the creation of generalizable technology and methodologies, applicable to many other contexts and sites of historical and cultural importance.
The research project “Echoes: Reconstructing the life of traditional settlements through interactive experiences and 3d sound” The project is implemented within the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0" through the Action “Research – Create – Innovate” and is being funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
